Architectural School Resources

This is a list of places where the Dunwoody Architectural class has found materials for modeling and building prototypes locally in the Twin Cities and online.

Art Stores

Ax-Man Surplus – Most everything and anything you can imagine, especially electronics.

Scale Model Supplies – Mostly a model train store but has scaled figurines and hard to find modeling supplies.

Wet Paint – Boutique Art Store with great service and colorful products

Hub Hobby – A modeling and toy store with a speciality in radio controlled cars, planes and drones.

Dick Blick – Solid art materials resource with several locations

Art Materials – Solid store that I used to work at while it was in Dinkytown. I haven’t been to the new one but imagine that it is a good resource.

Michaels – A surprisingly good art store with some interesting items.

ePlastics – Online store that carries just about everything that can be cut to size. Expensive and not good for large sheet good purchases.

E & T Plastics – Local and national plastic supply company. I am told that they sell scraps but have never been.

Midwest Sign and Screen Printing Supply – This place does have scrap plastics and corrugated plastics for sale. Also very resource for plastic and sign paints.

Crown Plastics – Local large plastic sheet good supplier.

A-1 Acrylic’s

Express Composites – By far the best local supplier of all things fiberglass and mold making materials.

Fibreglast – Awesome supplier of all things fiberglass, carbon fiber and kevlar. Expensive but very informative do it yourself videos.

Joann Fabrics – Worth checking out for fabrics and misc. craft supplies.

Hiawatha Lumber – Small local lumber yard with better quality wood than you can buy at national stores.

Youngblood Lumber – Local lumber yard with hard to find exotic woods, veneers and laminates for furniture making.

Rockler Woodworking – Fine woodworking tools and supplies.  Excellent selection of just about everything.

Home Depot and Menards – Inexpensive place to get dowels, misc. nuts & bolts and lumber.

Discount Steel – Excellent resource for scrap and sheet metals. Worth a visit! The online catalogue is very useful for finding typical sizes and shapes.

McMaster-Carr – Excellent online source for fasteners, fittings, electrical, raw materials, tools etc.

Ace Hardware – I have found a good selection of misc. hardware at local Ace hardwares and not as much at the other hardware stores.

Fastenal – Another misc. nuts/bolts hardware store that has several convenient locations.
